Coming of the light John (1:1-18)

   When John starts his gospel he doesn’t start with the birth narratives like Matthew and Luke but as we saw last week he does begin with the incarnation, with the word becoming flesh and dwelling among us. There is one verse in this narrative that I want us to meditate on during the rest of this advent season. 

   In the NIV verse 5 says, “The light shines in the darkness but the darkness has not understood it.”  But the NIV has a footnote, or the darkness has not overcome it.  The ESV says, “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” You see we have to admit that there was a lot of darkness in our world when Jesus came and there is a lot of darkness in our world today but the darkness didn’t overcome the light.  The light is shining in the darkness. 

   That is what we want to meditate on this Advent season. What does it mean for us that the true light has come into the world and the darkness could not conquer it?  So during the next three Sundays we will look at “The Coming of the light” “Shining the Light” and “Showing the Light.”

   Jean ne débute pas son Évangile en narrant l’histoire de la nativité comme l’ont fait Matthieu et Luc mais par l’incarnation, comme nous l’avons vu la semaine dernière. La Parole se fit chair et a habitée parmi nous. Ce passage contient un verset sur lequel j’aimerais que nous méditions durant cette saison de l’Avent. 

   Selon LSG21, le verset 5 dit: “La lumière brille dans les ténèbres, et les ténèbres ne l’ont pas accueillie.”  Mais dans une note de bas de page, nous lisons: “et les ténèbres ne l’ont pas vaincu”.  La version du Semeur dit: “La lumière brille dans les ténèbres et les ténèbres ne l’ont pas étouffée.” Nous pouvons donc supposer qu’il y avait beaucoup de ténèbres dans notre monde lorsque Jésus est venu et qu’il y en a toujours beaucoup aujourd’hui mais que les ténèbres n’ont pas vaincu la lumière.  La lumière brille toujours dans les ténèbres.

   Voici le sujet de notre méditation pour cette saison de l’Avent. Qu’est-ce que cela signifie pour nous que la vraie lumière est venue dans le monde et que les ténèbres n’ont pu la vaincre ?  Durant les trois prochains Dimanche, nous verrons ensemble “La venue de la lumière” “Faire briller la lumière” et “Montrer la lumière.”
