THE DISCIPLE’S CALLING – Fred Henry

THE DISCIPLE’S CALLING
2 Peter 1:1-4
Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:  Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.  His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.  Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
2 Peter 3:18
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  To him be glory both now and forever!  Amen.
2 Pierre 1:1-4
Amen.

PRAYER:  Hear Jesus’ call to follow him in a life-time journey of growing in the grace and knowledge of God … for your glory and your kingdom’s sake … for our good!

Story of Jesus’ coming
The story of Jesus Christ is the story of how he came to earth
to make it possible for us to be related to the living God in a growing way.

As Jesus began his earthly ministry he called people to follow him.
Those people are called “DISCIPLES”

“THE DISCIPLE’S CALLING” is the theme for my message from God’s word to us today.

One of those first disciples was Simon son of John …
Story of Simon Peter’s calling (2 Peter 1:1a)
Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ.
Story began many years before when Jesus found them fishing and called them …
(Matthew 4:17-22; Luke 5:1-11)
– “Follow me” – be with Jesus … become like Jesus – LIFE FORMATION
Not just a momentary decision, but a lifetime process.
We call that process “DISCIPLESHIP”
– “From now on you will be catching people” = “Engage others” – LIFE MISSION
– also a process!
We call that process “DISCIPLE-MAKING”
Near end of Jesus earthly life …
(Matthew 28:19)
Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
Years later – Peter wrote 2 Peter.

And many more years later, we are fruit of that calling …
Story of our calling (2 Peter 1:1b)
To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ
have received a faith as precious as ours.
Like Peter … we are called by Jesus to a lifetime of …
Formation and Mission – BOTH!
Formation – “discipleship”
– A beginning in faith
– A life-time of growth
Mission – “disciple-making”
Formation part of Discipleship is about …

The story of Jesus Christ is the story of how he came to earth
to make it possible for us to be related to the living God in a growing way.
