The author to the book of Hebrews was writing to an urban church who lived in a multi-cultural setting something like us here in Paris. This church was under pressure and some of the people in the church were even being persecuted for their commitment to Jesus Christ. During the whole letter he encourages the believers to stand firm in the faith and to not become discouraged by the difficulties they are experiencing. Then toward the end of the letter he tells them, “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.â€
    That is kind of what we are planning on doing here this Sunday. Pastor Al and Carol have been the primary pastoral couple here at Trinity since 2010 and they are leaving to return to the US. So, this Sunday the format will be somewhat different than other Sundays at Trinity. We won’t have a message per se but we are giving Pastor Al and Carol as well as a few other people a last chance to share what is in their heart.
     Even as they leave though it is important to remember verse 8. After telling us to remember our leaders the author of Hebrews surely realized, Yes it is good to remember and honor those who have taught the word of God but what we must never truly forget is that our pastoral leaders fail and don’t live up to all they should but “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.â€Â He never changes and is always there.
    L’auteur de l’épître aux Hébreux écrivait à une église urbaine vivant dans un environnement multi-culturel, un peu comme nous, ici à Paris. Cette église était sous pression et certains membres de l’église étaient même persécutés à cause de leur engagement envers Jésus Christ. Tout au long de cette lettre, il encourage les croyants à tenir ferme dans la foi et à ne pas se laisser décourager par les difficultés qu’ils expérimentaient alors. Puis vers la fin de la lettre, il leur dit, “Souvenez-vous de vos leaders, ceux qui vous ont délivré la Parole de Dieu. Considérez leurs vies et imitez leur foi.â€
    Voici ce que nous voudrions faire ce Dimanche. Pasteur Al et Carol ont été le couple pastoral principal de Trinity depuis 2010 et ils nous quittent à présent pour retourner aux États-Unis. De ce fait, le format de ce Dimanche sera un peu exceptionnel. Nous n’aurons pas de réel sermon mais nous donnerons au Pasteur Al, Carol et ainsi qu’à quelques autres une dernière chance de partager ce qu’ils ont dans le cÅ“ur.
     Alors qu’ils nous quitte, il est important de se rappeler le verset 8. Après nous avoir demandé de nous souvenir de nos leaders, l’auteur réalisa que, oui, il est bon de se souvenir et d’honorer ceux qui nous ont enseigné la Parole de Dieu, mais ce que nous devons surtout ne pas oublier c’est que nos leaders pastoraux sont faillibles mais que “Jésus Christ est le même hier, aujourd’hui et pour toujours.â€Â Il ne changera jamais et il sera toujours là .
