   In my culture growing up in the USA, we never celebrated Ascension Day. It has only been since coming to France that I have seen Ascension being celebrated; the day 40 days after Easter when Christ ascended into heaven. But sadly, I wonder how many in fact understand what they are celebrating when they have off work for Ascension Day.Â
   The New Testament writers believed that the ascension of Christ was extremely important and they spoke about it often in their preaching. In fact, the Old Testament passage that is quoted or alluded to in the New Testament more than any other is directly related to the Ascension. Why is the ascension so important to the New Testament authors and why did the apostles proclaim with great courage that Jesus had not only risen from the dead but was ascended into heaven and is now sitting at the right hand of God the Father?
   What does it mean for us when we declare that we believe that Jesus ascended into heaven and is now seated at God’s right hand? Let’s look at the ascension together!
   Dans ma culture en grandissant aux États-Unis, nous ne célébrions pas le jour de l’Ascension. C’est seulement depuis ma venue en France que j’ai vu cela; 40 jours après Pâques lorsque Christ s’en est allé aux cieux. Malheureusement, je me demande combien comprennent réellement ce qu’ils célèbrent lors de ce jour férié.Â
   Les auteurs du Nouveau Testament croyaient que l’ascension de Christ était extrêmement importante et en parlaient dans leurs enseignements. Le passage de l’Ancien Testament le plus souvent cité ou utilisé dans le Nouveau Testament est directement lié à l’Ascension. Pourquoi l’ascension est-elle si importante à leur yeux et pourquoi les apôtres proclamaient-ils avec grand courage que Jésus était non seulement ressuscité des morts mais aussi élevé aux cieux et qu’il est maintenant assis à la droite de Dieu le Père?
   Qu’est-ce que cela signifie lorsque nous déclarons que nous croyons que Jésus est monté aux cieux et qu’il est assis à la droite de Dieu? Voyons l’Ascension ensemble!
