Mary’s Song (Luke 1:34-56)

Music and singing are quite an important part of what we do here at Trinity, but that is not unique to us.  Music has always been a tremendous part of a Christian heritage. Whether we have pleasant voices or not there are sometimes we just can’t help singing, and Christmas is definitely one of those times.

Two thousand years ago, the Son of God first spread his light into this dark world, and just as on a spring morning the rising of the sun is accompanied by the lovely sound of the birds singing, so the rising of the Son of God was accompanied by song.  Elizabeth sang, the angels sang, Mary sang.

This advent season we have been studying together the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus and this coming Sunday we want to look at Mary’s song.  The song of Mary, or the magnificat as it has been named from its opening words in the Latin Vulgate, is an amazing song of surrender and submission to God but it is also a prophetic message of the reversal of values that the kingdom of God would bring into the world, of the changes that Israel’s Messiah would bring.  Let’s look at it together.

Voyons cela ensemble.
