A Song for the King (Psalm 72)

We are all familiar with Matthew’s account of the Magi coming from the East looking to find the newborn King of the Jews.  They came to Jerusalem asking, “where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We have seen his star in the East and have come to worship him.”  (Mt. 2.2)

Herod was disturbed at this news for it implied a rival to his throne and so he sought more information. The teachers of the law has studied the prophets like Micah who had spoken over 700 years earlier of the glory that would come to the little town of Bethlehem by a ruler coming to rule the people Israel. The scribes had undoubtedly also read Psalm 72; a song written for the king’s enthronement ceremony.

This song sums up well what we are “waiting for” this Advent season.
